Ball Memorial Hospital

Ball Memorial Hospital is a community hospital with over 350 beds,

and serves as a tertiary referral center

and teaching hospital for East Central

Indiana. Its referral base

is approximately 500,000 spanning a

eight-county area.

BMH was also recently named as one of the top

100 hospitals in the United States in the

teaching hospital category.

Active in medical education for over 70

years, Ball Hospital provides internships

and residency programs for over 60 house

staff members representing family medicine,

internal medicine, pathology, and
transitional year.

The hospital maintains a close affiliation
with the Indiana University School of
Medicine as a satellite center for first-
and second-year medical students. In

addition, many third- and fourth-year

IUSM students complete required and

elective clerkships at BMH. Residents

and faculty are therefore actively involved

in the teaching of medical students.

The hospital's Medical Staff consists
of more than 300 physicians representing
over 50 specialties. Supported by the
hospital's commitment to excellence, the
medical staff has strong backing from the
hospital board and administration, which has
historically provided diagnostic and treatment
capability enhancement.

Ball Hospital's library has 10,000 volumes and subscribes to more than 900 journals. Free computerized literature searches, Internet access and free photocopying are available. Residents have ample work areas with personal telephones and dictation equipment.

Built in 1992, the five story Outpatient Medical Pavilion opened, to provide services such as ambulatory surgery, physician offices offering a variety of medical specialties, resident offices and conference rooms, and the Outpatient Dialysis Building opened in 1996. The new Cancer Center became fully operational in 2002, and the new Emergency Department opened in 2005.

The largest renovation to BMH since the North Tower was built in the late 1970s is the new South Tower (with new critical care units, progressive care, step-down units, and medical floors), which opened in early 2010.

Ball Hospital has developed an extensive computerized medical record system that facilitates the viewing of patient records from multiple sites in the hospital. This facilitates the organized review and completion of medical records. Full online medical journal and textbook capabilities are available on Internet-enabled workstations. Each resident is issued a laptop computer for instant access to all resources.
